1st time building a computer need some answers. please?
starters never built a comp before. i have an alienware area-51 comp that is about 4 years old. its the one that looks like an alien head. my question is. how do i know if the mother board and processor will fit before i buy them. are they pretty much standard. the case i have now is really big inside. can anyone give me some ideas. heres what im trying to put into the case i have. intel i7 processor, asus maximus formula2 motherboard, saphirre radeon 4870 video card and a 1000 watt power supply and a zelman cooler. im using the same hard drives and sound card. help if you can thanks.
Motherboards have been standard in size for a while now. The only thing you have to pay attention to is if your mounting holes line up (unless you get the luck of using a motherboard tray). Obviously make sure that your processor and socket match (both should be labeled) and your processor fan is rated for the speed of your processor. Would suck to burn that out the first time you start it up. Also make shure you apply thermal grease to the processor. A SMALL amount goes a long way! I've seen way to many systems have issues from too much of the stuff. Your processor should have come with it. If not pick some up. Buy the smallest amount you can. You may not use it for a while.
Another thing. Verify you have enough connections for all your fans. Low cooling can further mess things up. What do you have for memory? Are you using the old stuff from the AW? If so that may not work. You may need to get memory that will work with your system.
