Is it normal for my computer to take over 12 hours to do a C Drive disk check?
I an running Windows 7 on an Alienware laptop that I got 3 months ago. Everytime I boot, it asks to perform a disk check so this time I allowed it to but it took over 12 hours and did not complete. My computer has been running pretty slow ever since this message popped up so I think I should probably complete it eventually
It's possible, the time it take to finish the checks is depending on:
- Speed of your hard-disk.
- The size of your hard-disk.
- How full it is (in %).
- How many bad blocks appears to be on the disk.
2 major things to keep in mind:
- If the disk gets over 80% full, it will additionally slow down more, because it can not swap sufficient enough to optimize the disk.
- If the disk get above 90% full the OS can not swap (virtual memory) efficiently anymore.
So, yes it's possible.
My recommendation:
- If your hard disk is of a reasonable size (+ 6GB), I would partition it.
- If you partition, separate the OS from the data.
