Could someone tell me the required specs for a good gaming desktop computer?
I'm wondering what the minimum specs would have to be in order for it to play any current game decently and how much it would cost.
To play MOST newer games decently, you'll need an Athlon 64 processor, 1GB of RAM, and an absolute minimum of an X1600 Pro video card. The X1600 Pro's "equivalent" is the 6600GT, although the X1600 Pro handles AA and AF much better, as do all ATI cards. If you build a system like this yourself, it can be done for as little as $600-700, if all parts are new.
To be able to play FEAR, Oblivion, Flight Simulator X, etc, requires a minimum of 2GB of RAM, a faster dual-core processor, like an X2 4400 or faster, or any Core 2 Duo, and at least an X1950XT or 7950GT video card. Total cost of this system, if you build yourself, and buy every component new, will be in the neighborhood of $1,500.
Just remember, for gaming computers, spend your money on the video card, and 2GB of RAM. 2GB of RAM is the new "norm" for gaming computers, and all new games now require it.
