The Shas'la, Shas'o, and others are all names for the Tau equivalent of Sergeants. Usually in the army list entry, it will say something along the lines of "Fire Warriors: XX points for a squad of 5. +X points for each additional Fire Warrior in the unit. Upgrade one Fire Warrior to a Shas'ui for +X points." X of course standing for the actual point values in your codex. The squad will usually benefit from the Shas'ui's improved leadership, wargear capacity, and overall stats.

** I haven't looked at the Tau codex in a while, so I might have confused the names - each type of unit, whether it be Fire Warriors, Broadsides, Stealth Suits, or whatever has a 'sergeant' that starts with "Shas."

An interesting question. The current Imperial Guard codex references the 4th Edition rulebook for which it was written, directing the reader to the universal rules for plasma weapons by an asterisk. The 5th Edition space marine codex specifically cites the "gets hot" rule.

In what's known as "rules as written" (RAW) gaming, this could technically be interpreted as meaning that Imperial Guard plasma weapons don't get hot (as it is part of the official rules that codex overrules core rules).

Having said that, however, "rules as intended" (RAI) certainly meant to say that Imperial Guard weapons get hot like marine weapons and anyone trying to argue otherwise in my wargaming club would have dice thrown at him until he gave in.

Moreover, there is a new Imperial Guard codex released on 6 May 09, so the question will become moot as this will certainly restore the "Gets Hot" special rule explicitly to Guard plasma weapons.

Warhammer - The Emperor of Mankind

The Warhammer 40,000 is a space fantasy setting that consists of a vast fictional universe. It has various races which includes the Imperium of Man, the Orcs and the Eldar. The races and their playing rules are covered in the game’s rulebook and supplementary army codexes. The Warhammer 40,000 setting is not only used in tabletop games but as well as with video games and on different works of fiction.

Knowing the beginning of Warhammer is one way to fully understand the game and it settings. One of the three major races in the game is the Imperium. The Imperium is being led by the Emperor of Mankind. The Emperor of Mankind is being described by the Imperial Ecclesiarchy as the Father, Guardian and God of Humanity. He have been on the Golden Throne of Earth for ten thousand years, however when he was still alive his body can no longer support life and remains to be intact through the support of soul- sacrifices of countless millions and he has sacrificed his immortal life in the service of Man.  To Mankind he is nothing less than a god, through Imperium he had held mankind together and formed one of the strongest races in the galaxy. His leadership was extensive and cruel.

At the present day, even though he is no longer directly involved with the operations of the Imperium the presence of the Emperor of Mankind at the Golden Throne is essential to sustaining of the Imperium for he sustains the Astronomicon.  Astronomicon is the Emperor of Mankind’s psychic aura derived from his Golden Throne. The aura can be seen by ship navigators, thus it enable people to travel through the Warp. The Emperor of Mankind is believed to be guiding his race the Emperor’s Tarot and believes to be constantly fighting Chaos and prevents the material universe from intrusion.

With the current setting the Emperor’s history and origin subsequent to unifying Terra has been left mysterious. The Emperor was first mentioned at the Imperial records after he had unified the Terra during the end of the Age of Strife.  It has believed that he had been immortal and ancient even before his ascension to the Golden Throne.  He is also the first and the greatest of the race of psykers and known as the New Man.

The Emperor has guided and oversees humanity to develop before he became the Emperor of Mankind thousand years before. He had seen the extremes of human nature were feeding the Chaos and he started to seek peace and harmony, thus leading into the creation of the Chaos of Powers. Because of this the Chaos Powers had distinguished the Emperor as their greatest enemy amongst the intellectual races in the galaxy.

It was only during the Age of Strife that the Emperor became known in gaining control in the future of humanity and conquering the other factions and established his rule over Earth. The first Space Marines was created by the Emperor with the help of Adeptus Mechanicus on Mars. The Space Marines was created for the Great Crusade that would unify mankind into one Imperium. The Primarchs were also created by the Emperor in which the Space Marine’s genes were developed. Primarchs and the Space Marine Legions were united during the Great Crusade and while the Emperor travelled across the stars there were some that worshipped him however all he wanted was to enslave humanity and free them.

You will need your mandatory troop choices; so fire warriors or carnivores seem like a good choice. It looks like you can get a devilfish and eight fire warriors for £30, if you'd like to have an APC for your troops. Won't be enough to play with but it'll get you started on the army.

On the other hand, a box of fire warriors by themselves is £18 for 12 and carnivores are £18 for 16. You could get a box of each and have enough models to at least proxy a list.

Warhammer 40,000 Tau Empire ...

Warhammer 40,000 is a miniature tabletop war game that is set in outer space. In this futuristic science fiction game, the human race is constantly in combat with alien invaders that want to destroy the Imperium of Man, the largest empire ever built on the Milky Way galaxy.

Created by Games Workshop, the Warhammer 40k tabletop war game has been around since the late 80's. The improvements done on the game, however, have not stopped ever since. Now, the 40k tabletop game is on its 5th edition and countless players both new and veterans alike continue to play this epic game worldwide.

The most unique feature of Warhammer 40k is that it lets the players literally build their own army. From choosing the army, to gluing the pieces of each model and painting them, the player gets to experience the thrill of creating an army of their own for battle.

The painting of the models is what's most fun about the game as it creates unique sets of models for each player. The races you choose may be the same as several other players, but your method of painting the models make your models "yours".

There are 11 armies that can be built in the 40k tabletop game. Each of these armies uses different weapons, machinery, and tactics, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. It is therefore, important to choose your allegiance very carefully before buying your models.

There are two ways to go with getting started in Warhammer 40k. The first method is to purchase the Warhammer 40k rule book as your starting point. The Warhammer 40k rule book is available to guide you in choosing your allegiance. The hardbound copy of the 40k rule book contains all the rules of the game including the back-stories of each army and some artwork as well.

When you've decided what army to buy, the next step is to read its "codex". A codex is a rule book for a specific army or race. There you can find information about all the models available for an army. This is an important step before finally buying an army because it is important to be able to like the way your army looks, as well as the tactics they use. This is also essential for choosing the models that you buy first as you don't need all the models for you to start playing the 40k tabletop game.

The second, and more advisable option is to purchase what is known as a starter set. For Warhammer 40k, the starter set is called Assault on Black Reach, and it includes two mini-armies to play with - the Space Marines, superhuman warriors of the Imperium of Man, and the Orks, brutal enemies of the Imperium.

Basically, the box set contains all you need to play the 40k tabletop game: 2 starter armies, a dice, rule rangers, and a starter guide. While you may not want to play using these two armies, the box set is still useful to get the feel of the game as the box set also includes a compressed version of the Warhammer 40k rule book. Now, all you need is someone to play with and a tabletop to set up the battlefield.

Once you learn to play the game using the Assault on Black Reach starter set, you can then either choose to expand on one of the two armies in the set - the Space Marines or the Orks - or you can explore and choose a totally different army.

Regardless whether you end up choosing one of the two armies as your main army in the long run, it is still great to have the Assault on Black Reach starter set as it gives you the opportunity to introduce your friends to the hobby when they come over. By having these two starter armies ready to play, you can get your friends into the game quickly with zero investment on their part to start playing. Once they play the game with you, they will surely have just as much fun as you have with the game and go out and buy their own starter set or start building their own army.

Well, marks have changed. a lot of point cost changes. Oblits are now heavies. Demon princes cant have demon weapons anymore. No more nurglings. basically everything was streamlined and made easier to build your army faster. Raptors rock, khorne is still tough, thousand suns are nice and ahriman is a beast. If you plan on playing the game again go spend the 20 bucks and get the dex becaus the old one phases out of tournament play at the end of this month.
