As with most 40k army choices, it really does depend on what kind of fighting style you're looking to play. The three armies you've chosen are all pretty different, and have their own strengths and weaknesses. I'll go through each in turn.
Tyranids - these are arguably the most popular of the three armies you've chosen. They've got some powerful monstrous creatures and strong troops - you can build a pretty impressive horde army with them to overwhelm your enemy. It's also interesting to note that Games Workshop will be bringing out a new Tyranids codex in January 2010, which will give them new rules, and they'll also be bringing out new plastic models for them too to support the new codex release.
Tau - they are one of 40k's most shooty armies, with some pretty impressive weaponry on their side. If you like the idea of blasting your opponent at range with hover-tanks and battlesuits bristling with weapons, these are the guys to go for. They are, however, pretty useless in close combat! Do not bother with an Etherial though - once you've read the rules, you'll understand why they're not a great unit to take. I would personally drop the Kroot for some Firewarriors too - the Firewarrior's pulse weapons are very nasty.
Dark Eldar - out of the three armies you've picked, these are the ones I'm most unfamiliar with, never having played against them. I do know that their codex is pretty outdated, and I'm not sure . Therefore, my impression is that they're not the most popular or competitive of armies. Unless you really like the background, I would give them a miss, unless other answerers can give you a convincing reason to take them.
If I was in your position, I would wait until January and pick up the new Tyranid codex. If you're unwilling to wait, then I'd go for the Tau. They're a fun army, have some great looking models, and a lot of firepower on their side. You have to play them smartly however, and not let your opponent get too close. The Dark Eldar are too uncompetitive to pick in my humble opinion, at least until GW gives them some more love.

Gone are the 4th edition days of fielding two minimal Guardian jetbike squads. A general with sound Eldar Tactics knows troops are vitally important under the new 5th edition rule set. For a typical 1500 point game, I believe three or four units of troops is the optimal choice. You could of course take minimal troops and go for the automatic 'wipe out' win. Here's a brief outline of the Eldar Troop Tactics I use.
Dire Avengers:
Dire Avengers are the unit of choice for most Eldar armies in fifth edition. They fit in with all types of Eldar Tactics, as they function well on foot and in transports. Dire Avengers are a fantastic close range unit, pumping out a high volume of very accurate firepower. GEQs crumble to massed Dire Avenger firepower. Against MEQ's it likely you'll need to tie the shooting in with a successful Doom. Dire Avengers are best fielded in units of 10, this raises there ranged effectiveness and gives you a greater chance of holding up the enemy during assaults. Precision strikes are the key to successful Dire Avenger Tactics. Get into position as quickly as possible strike fast, strike hard.
Defender Guardians:
Eldar tacticians tend to fall into two trains of thought regarding Guardians - those that love them and those that loath them. Guardians have access to a move and fire heavy weapon, making them useful in support of assault units blasting Shurikan Cannon or Scatter Laser, or sitting back on the gun-line sniping vehicles with Brightlances or Eldar Missile Launchers. This opens up a whole host of varying Eldar Tactics.
Storm Guardians:
Regular Guardians are the close assault Guardians of the Eldar list. They must get up close and personal to be effective and make an ideal support unit when used in conjunction with an Avatar or specialist assault Aspect Warriors. Do not expect them to win you the game alone! Their lack of grenades of any kind is a huge tactical weakness. Flamers are very useful if you are going up against GEQs. Fusion Guns can be useful for killing MEQ's or knocking a tank out, but I wouldn't rely on it. The Eldar list has better options for Marine and vehicle hunting. The Warlock is an essential upgrade for Storm Guardians. He gives them additional close combat bite and an extremely useful psychic ability. Destructor, Enhance, Embolden or to a lesser extent conceal.
Guardian Jetbikes:
Guardian jetbikes are excellent fast moving objective claimers under the 5th edition rule set. They have a solid rate of fire provided by their 1 in 3 Shurikan Cannon ratio and benefit from moving in the assault phase for hit and run style attacks. In spite of their obvious advantages Jetbikes are very fragile and will be picked off if left in the open. Tactically I find them best as a mobile reserve or wide out on the flanks harassing the edge of the enemies force where their low range and assault phase movement can best be utilised.
Rangers/Pathfinders:
Rangers, who can be upgraded to Pathfinders make for excellent objective holders. I rarely leave home without a unit. They're weak in assault though so it's a sound tactic to keep a counter assault unit nearby to help defend or deter assault units. They specialise in taking down high toughness models from afar, so if you are up against Tyranids, you'll find these guys extremely effective. Pinning is another benefit of the sniper rifle. Don't rely on it heavily though, a large portion of the units you encounter on the battlefield have high leadership. Whether or not to upgrade to Pathfinders is a difficult decision, I personally think the upgrade is worth it. The additional AP1 chance and additional cover save means you only have to kill one or two more marines or pass an extra save to make make your points back.
That concludes the Troops portion of the Eldar Tactics Guide.

Warhammer 40k players usually start out playing the game with their friends and then move on to play in tournaments hosted by various game shops and even Games Workshop themselves. Warhammer 40k battles vary in length depending on the type of battle that is played. Some battles can last hours, and some may even last up to several days. The 40k tabletop game has definitely evolved since its creation in 1987, but one thing remains the same; its unique models and gameplay still make Warhammer 40k one of the most successful games of its kind.
Choosing an army or race is usually based on three criteria: the look, the story, and the tactics of the army. Each army is different in its own way, and you will soon learn that there is no perfect army. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, and winning the game usually just comes down to the strategies of each player, and also a little bit of luck.
After you've chosen an army and read the Warhammer 40k rule book and the army's specific "codex", you can now proceed to buying your first pieces of models. The exciting part is that you get to assemble your own model, and you get to paint it as well. This makes each piece of your army unique from your opponent's and allies'.
After your army is set for battle, the next thing you and your opponent should do is to set up the rules and goals for the battle and set up the scenery of your 40k tabletop. Games Workshop also created a 40k battle terrain of their own which is available in the market, but most battles occur on custom made terrains players created themselves.
Most players find it more fun and exciting to build their own battlefield and scenery. This is where your creativity will be put to the test. Small-scale battles are sometimes drawn basically just on top of a table covered with basic battle-mat. However, some players get really creative and build various obstacles for the battle using things that can be found inside the house such as cereal boxes, coffee cups, and tin cans that can be transformed into barracks, buildings, and the like. Some even go all out in creating various elements of the terrain such as hills and lakes and covering their handmade creations in paper mache and painting them for a full-blown effect.
From creating your own army to building the terrain to be used for the battle, the Warhammer 40k tabletop game will definitely squeeze out every ounce of your creative juices. That's the great part about the 40k tabletop game; once everything is set and the battle begins, nothing can compare to the fulfillment you feel when you see your hard work pay off in battle.
Is that "just starting" the game or "just starting" the army?
If you're just starting the game, I'm half-inclined to say "don't start with Eldar"! But if that's the army that gets you excited about the hobby, then who am I to disagree? The Eldar Battleforce is good value at £50 and gives you a decent core starting point. Add an Autarch as an HQ choice and you're ready to get going.
For expanding the army, the Eldar rely upon a combination of fast movement and elite troops to out-manoeuvre the enemy and overwhelm them with firepower and furious combat before opponents can strike back. It the enemy is able to riposte, the Eldar are fragile. If refused the chance to manoeuvre, they are vulnerable.
So Aspect Warriors - for the elite element - in Wave Serpents, with jetbikes (both for manoeuvrability) are the way to go. Wraithlords, Guardians and support weapons are all nice to have, but contribute more in games of 2,000 points or more as they tend to be slow or even static and - therefore - vulnerable to enemy fire and assault.

This particular article concerns published books or supplements as they relate to the Warhammer 40,000 game. One rather large selection of these books are known as Codex's. A codex in Warhammer 40,000 war games is a set of rules containing information which concerns a particular army, or an environment, or even a worldwide campaign.
Codex's for various armies were first introduced to apply to the 2nd edition of the warhammer game. This codex's have since become obsolete and have been replaced with newer series which includes battle zones as well as campaigns.
Games Workshop which created the Warhammer series will no longer produce any campaign or battle zone codex instead they have released what is known now as expansions. The word Codex is now strictly used to designate an army book.
Codex usually contains an Army list. This is a list of the various army units, the characters within the units and the vehicles for which a player may select for use in the battles.
The codexes will also contain background information. This information will be about the military force in question and its active place in the Warhammer 40,000 framework. It will include bits of artwork, several short stories and images of fictional documents that portray the future.
From the viewpoint of our current time and the player himself the book will include a hobby section. Here you can find information relating to collecting warhammer miniatures, building or painting a particular army from its available codex. Of particular interest is the very detailed Warhammer Models with such fine workmanship that they look like they belong in a museum.
There is also a section entitled Special characters. These pages contain rules and background information for many of the particular army's remarkable characters.
As of June of 2008 the list of codex's are Army codex's such as Black Templar's, Chaos Daemons, Blood Angels, Chaos Space Marines, Eldar, Dark Angels, Orks, Tau Empire, Space Marines and Tyranids.
Other types of codexes are the 3rd edition codexes, Battlefield codex's, Apocalypse, Event codexes, Armageddon and Eye of Terror.
As you can tell there is much to be learned and understood concerning the warhammer game and the creators of the game have provided the fans with an abundance of literature and books for which to work with.

Players selling guides for massively multiplayer online role playing games are becoming more and more popular each day. Warhammer Online is the newest game and players are trying as hard as possible to push out the quickest guide to sell to players. If you really think about it, can another player possibly know that much more information than another that they can charge another player an overpriced $19.99 just to read their guide?
The game is too early for any player to really develop any guide that can contain that valuable of information that another can offer considering the game has yet to even be released. Why pay for information when many sites even provide that information for free. Majority of the information these paid for guides are scraped off other sites, blogs and forums and combined, compacted and reworded to become their own guide.
As the game is set to be released on September 18th many players will be pushing hard to level their characters as fast as possible as well as farming as much gold as they can on the process. Warhammer gold is valued the highest during the start of the game when every player is striving to get as much of it as possible into their own hands.
Some good pointers that will give you a bit more advantage over another player, pick up a profession and complete as many quests that is convenient and within your reach. Picking up a trade skill early on the game can give you a big advantage, especially a gathering profession. A gathering profession such as butchering, scavenging, magical salvaging or cultivating can grant you great bonuses during your early journey. By utilizing all your resources early in the game and continuing it will yield rewards later on the game. Rather than achieving the max level then going back to level up your profession you can gain all that benefit and sell your extra resources while leveling your character up.
Completing quests as you’re grinding on mobs to level will increase the benefits. Chances are if you are killing a specific mob in the game, there is also a quest that will tell you to do the same. Why not kill those mobs and complete the quests at the same time and reap additional rewards. Many quests will provide you with additional exp that will help you level faster. Some other quests can also offer gold and special items such as potions, powders, weapons and armors. By getting these items through quests you can save your gold and not have to purchase them yourself. Along with that fact, the rewards also tend to be much better than the quality that you are able to get anywhere else within your level.
These are some very basic tips that can definitely give your game an extra boost. Keep in mind that there really isn’t a guide worth paying for at this early on the game unless it’s an official guide from EA Mythic themselves. Save your cash and use free farming guides and leveling guides. At this point they are just as effective.
