what would be a good start to a new dark eldar army besides the codex?
i want to star a new dark eldar army in warhammer 40k (feel free to penalise for playing warhammer) but i don't know where to start im going to get the codex and mandrakes what else should i get

Hi. Long time player, long time Dark Eldar player.
First of all, yes get the Codex. With that you can plan an army.
Once you look at that, you'll need to think about the style of army you want to play. You need at least two unit of Troops. To try them out, I might suggest getting one unit of Warriors and one unit of Wyches. Then you need a HQ. You can either go for a special character, a few Haemonculi, or an Archon. I'd suggest an Archon, as they can be varied and a good place to start for a beginner.
I would also recommend at least one Raider (transport vehicle) to get a feel for them and add some mobility).
That would give you a basic core to your army. My primary suggestions beyond that might be some Hellions or Reavers for fast moving units, and maybe something like Incubi for a really good combat unit.
I would say get and read the Codexs first though. Buy nothing until then, so you can get a good feel for them to start. I'll warn you that Dark Eldar are very much a glass cannon (powerful when hitting, but can't take much damage themselves) but still a good and fun army to play with.
I further recommend you sign up with www.warhammer.org.uk, its a forum of good and friendly Warhammer players, and a good place to ask opinions on army lists and painting technique. I'm there under the username Squidmaster.
