Are the imperial guard a decent army in warhammer 40k?
also could I get a little info on there play style?
I would be tempted to agree with the previous user, up to a point. While the Imperial Guard can field an entirely tank army or an entirely troop army or do a mixture of both, the long-range nature of the Imperial Guard is where they tend to shine the brightest.
They have a very unique squad/platoon system that was most recently updated with the addition of "orders" - allowing the commander (basically you on the field) to give temporary, "one turn only" abilities. (Although they can be renewed each turn.) In that way, they have a very versatile infantry system. However, they fall apart when it comes to close combat. Their dedicated troops for this purpose are OK, but not stellar, like the specialists in some other armies. Their strength/toughness means that they won't be dishing out or taking damage very well, but their leadership system, when played well, means that they won't be running away very much either.
On the flipside, they have the most armor available out of any army, with the most potential for variants. If you like tanks, this is definitely the army for you. Tanks can be a bit expensive (both $$$ and points-wise), but they're worth it - their capability on a point-for-point basis is better than a lot of other forces (no, I don't have the numbers for that - it's just observation). They can be tooled up to be both infantry and tank killers, often at the same time. They also have a special rule that allows them to take more tanks per standard force than any other army. However, the downside to all of this is that means you're taking less infantry. The trouble with that, is that the infantry (troops) is the only thing that is allowed to capture objective points - so if you load up on tanks, you have to really focus on keeping your infantry well covered.
All in all, the Imperial Guard are a solid force to be reckoned with. It can take a bit of time to get used to it, and a bit of finesse to master (even with the really big tanks), but its a solid army all-round. Just make sure that you're up to making a lot of infantry - you'll probably need it!
