Warhammer 40k miniatures paint?
Does anyone know if there is good paint that works but isn't extremely expensive. The GW ones are about 3 dollars a piece and people have told me about another kind called reaper which is cheaper but not by much. Is there any other kind of paint that you can use that doesn't cost that much?
Citadel Paints are a little on the pricey side when one considers that they usually dry out or clump before one gets to finish them.
The Reaper range are well-reputed, although I've not used them myself, but Reaper is said to be in financial difficulty so they may not be around for long.
Vallejo is probably the best internationally-available set of acrylic miniature paints besides Citadel (which are very good). Their main advantage over the Citadel range is that they use a "dropper" bottle. This means that you put a little drop of paint on your pallette and it preserves the texture and consistency of the rest of the paint in the bottle. You get less in the bottle than in Citadel paints but you do usually use the whole bottle before it dries up.
Most of the top painters of which I'm aware use a mix of Vallejo and Citadel paints - although I have to say that the new Citadel Foundation range has created quite a stir. Used with skill, they are by far the best paints to use for base colours produced by anyone anwhere.
While I'm here, I'll just point out that you shouldn't attempt to use artists' acrylic paints on miniature models. Artists' are formulated for paper and so have a much, much lower pigment content and a much higher water (or other medium) content. Using them on miniatures would require dozens of layers to get anywhere close to the coverage of even an average miniature paint. The reason Foundation Paints are so good as a base colour (but, at the same time, quite tricksy to use for beginners) is because their pigment content is the highest on the market. They get great coverage but dry very quickly, making the paint go "blobby" on the brush if not used with great care.
